Richie J. Maitland
Richie is a Counsel at the firm, where he leads the firm’s criminal practice.
Prior to joining Fredericks, he served as Senior Crown Counsel at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, where he gained extensive experience in the prosecution of serious criminal matters and the conduct of complex trials. His work in public service reflects a deep understanding of criminal procedure and courtroom advocacy.
Before entering public service, Richie practised at a prominent law firm in Grenada, where he developed a strong foundation in criminal defence and broader litigation practice.
As head of our Criminal Practice, Richie brings strategic leadership, rigorous preparation, and fearless advocacy to the defence of his clients. He is known for his sound judgment, command of the law, and commitment to ensuring fairness and due process at every stage of proceedings.
Beyond his criminal practice, Richie has undertaken extensive work across the Caribbean in the area of constitutional law and human rights. His work has included awareness-raising initiatives, research on emerging constitutional jurisprudence in the region, and advocacy before international and regional bodies, including the United Nations and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
